Ten years ago, The Last Letter entered the world as an unassuming novel about memory, resilience, and the enduring ways our lives leave their mark on one another. Written as a series of letters between 1999 and 2003, the novel follows fifteen-year-old Amelia Lenelli, a teenager trying to understand her place in the world when a mysterious illness threatens to tear her world apart. When Lia tells her psychologist about the time capsule—a My Little Pony lunchbox she buried in her backyard garden—he encourages her to do one simple thing: write one last letter.
What begins as a small act of reflection becomes something much larger. Through her letters, Lia wrestles with illness, friendship, family, first love, and the fragile nature of time itself, all against the backdrop of a world that feels suddenly uncertain in the wake of national tragedy. Her words become a way to leave her mark—to tell the world how she's lived, who she's loved, and what she's trying to survive.
The book itself was born during a deeply transformative season of my own life, as I was navigating the challenges of chronic Lyme disease and searching for meaning in the midst of uncertainty. What began as a deeply personal story would go on to find a life far beyond the page.
Over the past decade, The Last Letter has made its way into the hands of readers, Lyme support communities, classrooms, and conversations about healing, storytelling, and the power of turning pain into purpose. Along the way, the novel was warmly received by the literary community, earning recognition from Kirkus Indie Reviews, Writer’s Digest, and Publishers Weekly, while continuing to resonate with readers and patients navigating Lyme disease and other chronic illnesses. That journey has also become deeply intertwined with my own advocacy work through LymeBrave Foundation, where I continue to support awareness, education, and encouragement for those navigating the realities of Lyme disease.
This 10th Anniversary Hub is a place to reflect on that journey—how the story came to be, the experiences that shaped it, and the many ways its message continues to live and grow. Here you’ll find reflections from the past ten years, resources connected to Lyme awareness, media and events, a special collector’s edition of the book, and new writing inspired by its legacy. Because even though Amelia wrote her last letter, a story is never truly over...
